Danish cord bench in Redwood

This bench was a speculative piece for a gallery show. I wanted to showcase the traditional danish cord weave using a simple bench construction. The wood used was very special river salvaged Old-growth redwood. It sold very quickly and found itself in a beautiful home on the Pacific coast of Mendocino.

It starts with getting rough components together and laying out proportions. the end-grain of this leg shows the density of growth in this special wood.

Smoothing faces with hand-planes and getting components ready for finish.

Pre-finishing with shellac seals the grain evenly. Next oil goes on clean and seamlessly.

By pre-wrapping the cord around the front and rear rails before the glue up I can save a lot of time and frustration by coiling a single strand rather than trying to feed through the tight gap.

After the bench is glued together the warp strands can go in from front to back. This is the easy part.

Weaving the weft, the final step.
